Many expatriate families own pets in Hong Kong despite the lack of a back yard or ideal walking conditions. Having a pet in Hong Kong can often provide a sense of stability for children and adults and of course they are wonderful companions. Acquiring a pet when you come to Hong Kong is not a problem and readily done. However, if you are planning on bringing your special member of the family, you need to be aware of pet importation regulations, the permit application process and so on.
By far, the easiest way to cover the do’s and don’ts of bringing your pet to Hong Kong is to contact the following companies. They’ll have the most up to date information.
Please be aware that if you intend to come to Hong Kong in less than a fortnight and want to bring your pet with you then you must ensure you have a veterinary health certificate from the exporting country. This is a mandatory requirement. Further, this certificate must not be obtained any earlier than 14 days prior to the pet’s departure date. All pets over the age of 5 months must be licensed and immunised against rabies every 3 years.
Pets coming from UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Hawaii are normally exempted from quarantine provided they comply with the requirements.
Both of the web sites above will provide further information about quarantine restrictions. |
