A move to Hong Kong with children involves many important decisions and fortunately finding the proper school for your child should not be difficult given the variety and abundance of schools on offer in Hong Kong. Many people choose to live in a particular residential area owing to its proximity to a specific school which they have in mind for their children. Others may want to live in a particular area but their school of choice is not within striking distance and therefore don’t mind sending their children on the school bus or driving them to school.
General Information
Education in Hong Kong is of a high standard. Schools are usually multi-cultural and co-ed. Education in Hong Kong is best explained by advising that there are two choices of education offered. One is through the English Schools Foundation (ESF) system and the other is through the private school system or International Schools such as Australian, American, Chinese, French, German-Swiss, Korean and Japanese to name a few.
In the interests of selecting which is the best school for your child it is important to satisfy yourself and make your own preliminary enquiries as soon as possible with schools offering the standard of education you require for your child.
Placement of a child is not guaranteed immediately and in some cases children may be placed on a waiting list. Therefore it is important to register your child with the school of your choice as soon as possible. Application and registration fees are generally charged. Some international schools require that a debenture be paid once the child has been accepted. The debenture secures the child's place and is used to fund the school's capital and maintenance costs. Once the child has left the school the debenture is redeemed without interest. To guide you, we have listed some pre-schools, junior schools and senior schools preferred by expatriates.
