Weekend Excursions - Beaches |
 |
|

There are numerous beaches in Hong Kong mostly maintained and run by the Urban Council. Urban beaches offer lifeguards, toilets and changing facilities and are well maintained. Look for fortnightly notices in the newspapers offering information on quality of water during the swimming season. These beaches are not surf beaches but are appropriate for little children and good fun for older kids.
One of the main problems with most of the beaches is rubbish that is washed up or left on the beach by others. On weekends beaches can get VERY crowded - best to go early and leave at lunch. Winter in Hong Kong is also a great time to stroll on the beaches and play some ball games with the kids so don't disregard going at this time of the year. A few favourite spots include: |
 |
 |
 |
Hong Kong Island
 |
| 1 |
Repulse Bay
Probably the most popular beach on Hong Kong Island. It has a temple close by the water which is great for photos. Junk food such as McDonalds and KFC are also right on the beach. The big drawback is that it is very popular with tourist groups. On weekends it is very busy and can get quite dirty with floating rubbish owing to inconsiderate people. It has a nice walkway which stretches out to the water and can be very pleasant at dusk and during winter! |
4 |
Deepwater Bay Beach
Popular for water skiing. Metered parking is available right next to the beach but get there early. Lots of lovely trees providing shade. |
| 2 |
Stanley Beach
Close to Stanley markets. Another nice beach with wind surfing available. |
5 |
Shek O Beach
Quite remote but those more adventurous should take bus No. 9 from Shau Kei Wan. |
| 3 |
St Stephens Beach
A twenty minute walk along Stanley Village Rd towards Stanley prison. |
6 |
Big Wave Bay
One of the few beaches in Hong Kong that gets waves - take bus No.9 from Shau kei Wan and do the rest on foot! Again, quite remote. |
New Territories
 |
| 1 |
Clearwater Bay
One of the cleaner beaches in Hong Kong and has a lovely outlook. Bus 91 from Choi Hung will get you right there. Many stairs to get down to the beach and plenty of free parking right next to the stairs. |
4 |
Beach Resort, Sai Kung
Walk along the esplanade from Sai Kung to the beach resort, have some lunch or a quiet drink while the kids frolic on the sand. Be warned though, no life guards patrol the beach. The fun here is mostly in the hiring of canoes and kayaks. Parking is available at the resort. |
| 2 |
Silver Strand
Smaller than Clearwater Bay with many stairs before you reach the beach. Metered parking is also available next to Asia Supermarket at Silverstrand. |
5 |
Butterfly Beach, Tuen Muen
This is a pretty beach offering a great view of the new airport. The water can get very dirty from the passing water traffic but it is a very pretty spot. Free car parking is available if you are early! |
| 3 |
Trio Beach, Sai Kung
Get to Hebe Haven public jetty, catch a Kaido to Trio beach or make your way down to the Hong Kong Marina. |
|
|
Outer Islands
| 1 |
Cheung Sha Beach, Lantau
This place is quite lovely and does get some waves. Go to Silvermine Bay then catch one of the buses going to the Po Lin Monastery or Tai O and get off when you see the beach. |
3 |
Discovery Bay Beach
This too is pretty and has a children's playground on the beach which is quite large. There is an open-air courtyard with a shopping centre nearby for food and other necessities. |
| 2 |
Hung Shing Yeh Beach, Lamma Island
A clean beach away from it all! |
4 |
Tung Wan Beach, Cheung Chau Island
This beach is popular with windsurfers. |
